The Bishop’s Action Foundation’s Chief Executive Officer, Simon Cayley, recently completed research into governance capacity in the voluntary and community sector for his MPhil thesis. His research sought to contribute to a better understanding of the issues that impact on the governance capacity of voluntary and community sector organisations.

Spirituality and Well-being in Older New Zealanders
This paper will report the findings of research conducted by the Bishop’s Action Foundation during the second half of 2008 with 45 Older New Zealanders. The research was conducted in Taranaki, Waikato, Wellington and Kapiti Coast and involved face to face interviews with a wide range of men and women aged between 50 and 90 years. The research gave participants the opportunity to share their understanding of the word “spiritual” and how they used their belief systems in times of crisis.

The Lived Experience of Older People in Rural Areas
The aim of this research was to identify the support needs and expectations of older people within rural areas and provide the understanding required to respond to these needs through policy formulation and delivery.

Capacity Self-Assessment Tool
The objective of the tool is to provide an accessible and easy to use self assessment process that enables voluntary and community sector organisations to undertake an effective evaluation of their capacity (and their capacity needs) on a regular basis. It can be used at all levels of an organisation - by governance, management and staff teams. The pilot version is available at the link below.
